A MODERN-DAY URBAN NARRATIVE

Dedicated to J.C.H., you sly devil you.

This story is based on actual events. 89% of it is factual. 11% of the material has been slightly modified, but only with the intention of making the story more – how do I put it – palatable. The characters’ names have also been modified to protect their identities.

*********************************

Diane was getting a little irate. It was 1:30pm already and she was late for her rendezvous. Not only was she a stickler for time, but she hadn’t seen Jerome for some time now, and was dismayed that she was running late. They were supposed to meet up in near-center-city Philadelphia at 1:30 but she was still more than 20 minutes away. This is not good, she thought to herself. The lights suddenly turned amber and almost instantaneously red on 69th street and she had to brake hard, only to endure honks and angry gesticulations from the cabbie behind her Toyota. So much for The City of Brotherly Love, she thought.

Fifteen minutes and numerous broken traffic laws later, she got to Pat’s. It was only two in the afternoon, and on a Saturday, so she found a parking space right there. [Those who know Pat’s know that finding parking around there is a virtual impossibility, especially in the evenings] No sooner had she shut the car door than she saw Jerome walking toward her, his easy smile at the ready. She couldn’t help herself; she ran to hug him. He in turn picked her up and twirled her around, so happy was he to see her. They eventually pried each other apart and just stood there, each one looking at the other, both grinning like idiots. He was still as powerfully built as ever, she noticed. If it were even possible, he looked even better than she remembered. Jerome, on the other hand, was blown away. He could hardly believe how grown up she now looked, how much she had blossomed into this curvaceous, vivacious young adult.

For some reason she just then remembered when they first met, all those years ago, in the Midwest. She had just turned 16 when she went for that conference and even though he had been 24, they found it easy to talk to each other, especially since the prospect of them being romantically involved was next to none, as far apart in age as they were. They’d hung out that entire weekend and at the conclusion of the conference, had exchanged numbers and email addresses.

They had kept in touch through the years and had even met up a couple of times after that, but this was the first time they’d seen each other in almost 2 years. So much had changed for them; Diane was now in her twenties and Jerome was engaged to be married in a few short months. As luck would have it, Jerome had to attend some job-related conference in Philadelphia which was perfect for Diane, who lived in the Baltimore-Washington region, especially because she wasn’t working that weekend. It was only a 2-hour drive at the most from her crib to the rendezvous, and here she was. It was a perfect day – temperatures were in the mid-sixties, the sun was shining and, amazingly, all this was in early January when the temperatures should’ve been well below freezing. Jerome and Diane stood over there on the sidewalk for the better part of a half-hour just talking about this and that, each of them brimming with stuff they needed to catch up on.

The heavenly aromas wafting over from Pat’s were eventually irresistible, so they went over there and lined up to place their orders. 10 minutes and 12 dollars later they were holding formidable-looking cheesesteaks. They didn’t want dust and fumes from passing cars to taint their food so they decided to walk to Jerome’s hotel room which was only a couple of miles from Pat’s.

“What a perfectly gorgeous day this is,” she said, as they were strolling up Wharton street.
“Not half as gorgeous as you though,” he quipped.
“Thanks. You’re so sweet,” she warmly responded.

They talked about everything and nothing, this and the other. Before they knew it they were opening the door to Jerome’s DoubleTree Hotel room. Jerome busted out some cans of Coke, grabbed some napkins and placed everything on the coffee table right by the couch and directly across the TV. He then unwrapped the cheesesteaks, placed them on some paper plates, then went back with them and sat next to her on the couch. No one said anything for the next 10 minutes – the cheesesteaks were that good. They just smiled at each other and muttered incomprehensible grunts of approval from time to time.

Their hunger sated, they just sat on the couch, the itis having kicked in majorly. Before they knew it, they were both lying on the couch apparently engrossed in some afternoon show on TV. He was about a head taller than Diane and, being closest to the TV in front of him, she absentmindedly noticed how well their bodies fit together. She suddenly could feel the warmth of his body, the scent of his cologne, his breath caressing the back of her neck. She immediately heard those warning bells clanging away, especially since she remembered that Jerome was engaged to be married in a few short months. She glanced at him in her peripheral vision but he seemed to be entirely immersed in the show. Good, she thought. He isn’t thinking anything.

Jerome, on the other hand, was busy trying to look distracted. It’s only when they lay on the couch that he began to think about… stuff. Her hair smelled so clean. The skin on her neck was almost yelling at him to put his lips to it, but he suppressed the urge. Then he started to notice just how warm her body was; a virtual hot water bottle, it felt like. Then, as she wiggled against him trying to get more comfortable the inevitable happened.

As she sought to get more comfortable, it felt to Diane like a flashlight was pushing up on her backside but then to her horror, when it twitched, she realized that she was arousing him! She immediately got up from the couch and, feigning the need to go to the bathroom, locked the bathroom door behind her and stared at her wide-eyed reflection in the mirror. What the hell is going on?!, she inwardly screamed.

To be continued. Keep it right here for Part II of this modern-day urban narrative.
